Translation    is    demanding    but    is    a    delightful    experience. Vasdev Mohi is a well-known Sindhi poet and critic.   A few years ago   he   published   his  collection   of   Sindhi   short   stories “Chequebook.”  I  am  fortunate  enough  that  I  have  got  the opportunity of translating this collection into English. Mohi, who is a sensitive poet, has succeeded in capturing the agonies and sufferings  of  marginalized  sections  of  society  in  many  stories. The first story “Sacrifice” realistically portrays the abject poverty of the family who are forced to sacrifice their goat.   The end of the story is different in the sense as it shows the triumph of pure human  feelings  over  all  the  external  adverse  circumstances. Story  leaves  an  abiding  impression  on  readers’  mind  who continue  to  think  about  inconsistencies  of  life  for  a  long  time. The last story “Chequebook” also highlights the life of domestic maid-servant  who  has  to  suffer  on  account  of  ill-  treatment  at the  hands  of  her  husband  and  poverty.    Story  realistically portrays  the  selfishness  and  greed  for  money  in  society.  Mohi who is a humanist once again asserts the purity of sentiments and  commitment  to  humanism. This  subaltern  concern  of  the writer runs through many of his stories.
