Ellipses: A Collection of Poems
This is a collection of poems composed by Arunima Hoskote. It reveals not just the poet’s journey through the dense and light moments of life but also reveals a spirit of enquiry and a temperament disposed towards astute perception of the mysteries of life. This is an anthology that evokes, provokes, questions, demands, suggests, reminds, and conjures up the mundanities of everyday life in an extraordinary manner. The poetry composed here tells the remarkable truths in a simple and humdrum way that touches readers in a breeze, without jarring them out of the reverie of life.
The Journey is just that – about the journey of life, through the proverbial ups and downs and cliched yet unique corridors of the poet’s mind and life. The poem, though starting on a dark note, makes way for a promising future, exactly replicating the poet’s voyage from darkness towards light. In all the poems, there is a repetition of the same underlying theme – dark moments shadowing the state of mind that the poet finds herself in and the move towards the state of mind desired by her. Peace is an evocative poem, once again, on the poet’s rumination of “peace in the world” – a state of being that is desirable but not yet a reality.
Until the Broken Silence Speaks Again is a journey of the poet towards finding a voice that has got hushed somewhere along life’s well-trodden paths – hence terming the silence as “broken”, which is learning to “talk back”. Note the use of oxymoron to describe opposing thoughts in this poem – the “shattered quietness” and “broken silence speaks again”. All the poems in the collection end on an idyllic note, creating a sense of achievement and accomplishment on the path.
