Essence of Hindustani Classical Music Vocal Tradition

  • ₹ 299.00

Indian classical music has gained universal appeal, especially during the last two decades. It is being popularized all over the world by scores of performing artistes. Yet, I feel its mass popularity and appeal is hindered by a lack of understanding of its basic essence by the people in general. And, these people are unable to find their answers in the numerous books available in the markets and in the libraries. Most of such books have been written for practicing musicians or for scholars of music.

I have not been able to come across a simple, yet a comprehensive book, for the ‘uninitiated’; for a common listener who, while he finds gratification and bliss in listening to Indian classical music, also wishes to satiate his desire to know in simple terms why a particular melody evokes a certain emotion within him or to understand what nuances a musical artist is employing to awaken a certain feeling within his heart.

My earnest desire to attract more and more people towards Indian classical music has led me to make a humble effort to write this book. Though there are two separate traditions of ‘Hindustani’ classical music, the vocal and the instrumental, the basic foundation of the two aspects is the same.

In this book I have touched upon mainly the vocal tradition of ‘Hindustani’ classical music. I have made a sincere effort not only to demystify the complexities of Indian classical music, but at the same time to dwell upon all its important aspects, so that every lover of music is able to understand and appreciate this rich art form.
