This book deals with the great pioneers who laid the foundation for the present scientific medicine. The advent of modern medicine is the result of great sacrifices made and struggles faced by highly dedicated doctors and scientists. About the Author: Dr.V.K.Muthu is a retired professor of Community Medicine with postgraduate qualifications in Public Health and Nutrition. He taught for nearly 30   years in Gandhigram Rural Institute, a deemed to be University in Tamil Nadu. He is deeply interested in social issues that affect social harmony. He is against war and   condemns the huge military spending by countries. He has authored three books of poems and a book of essays on social problems. He has written two books for medical students—one on Public Health and the other on Nutrition. His recent publication entitled “ Tales of some extraordinary men and women who shaped history’ was published by White Falcon Publishers, Chandigarh. He is a regular contributor to Times of India blogs. His deep interest in social issues and his desire to make this a better world has prompted him to write this book on the pioneers in medicine who have played a great role in the renaissance of medicine. He hopes that  that the story of how medical personnel of yester years struggled to create modern medicine will enlighten the people in general and medical fraternity in particular on the need to make medicine accessible to all. He also hopes that commercialisation of medicine should be checked by proper orientation of medical personnel towards social medicine. The great examples of humane conduct of the pioneers in medicine discussed in this book, it is hoped, will play a positive role in this respect.
