The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is widely considered to be a literary classic novel which was written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, and was published in 1925. In its first year, the book sold around 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald’s works saw a revival in 1945 – 1,50,000 copies of Gatsby were sent to Americans serving in WWII. The book became a part of American high school curricula and numerous stage and film adaptations in the following decades.
The story revolves around the millionaire Jay Gatsby. Nick Carraway, the narrator of the story and Gatsby’s neighbor was lured into his lavish world which curtained the reality of obsession, madness, and tragedy. The more he hears about Gatsby, the less he is sure of the truth.
The Great Gatsby is also a tragic love story on the surface, where Gatsby pursues his former lover Daisy Buchanan. However, the book is most commonly understood as a pessimistic critique of the American Dream.
