Opium - The Longest Hangover
It took me by complete surprise that my family farm in North East India was once the narcotic centre of the world, producing and exporting more drugs than any other place in history before it. Over a period of over a hundred years, millions of chests of opium would silently and surreptitiously sail from the fertile fields of Bihar, across the Bay of Bengal to Canton, poisoning and killing millions of Chinese consumers. The pushers kept pushing the narcotics and fought and won wars in the name of free trade, a story much like Narcos today, but set in the nineteenth century, creating billionaire families, many of whom retain their wealth to this day. The book explores a story which very few are aware of and how this unfortunate accolade has led to the terrible hangover that hovers over the region since then.
