The Ramayan has been retold through generations in India, bringing forth different versions of the story. It could very well be set in a spectacular time of advanced technology with Aryans flying chariots, or in the Stone Age, with half-monkey half-humans in Ram’s army. Or it could just be about a chieftain in the barren and frozen era of the ice age, looking for his wife, with an army of Homo Erectus by his side.

Sri Lanka might have been connected to India by land, or it might have even been closer to the Indian subcontinent. Demons may have been the Indian version of barbarians or Celts, who were considered monsters in Europe.

The book stays true to the epic tale of Ramayan but often adds a comic touch to the all too familiar story of courage, sacrifice and human endeavour. The characters seem contemporary in the way they think, talk and often act, allowing the reader to relate with them. Ultimately, Ram displays his military prowess as he wages a mother-of-all wars against Ravan and his mighty army.
