Brindisia continues the fortunes of Pasquale Carone and his family from 1979 onwards, and is a sequel to Terra Rossa, which charted his progress as a little boy in Puglia, south Italy, from 1939.

Pasquale is now a wealthy businessman in Brindisi, married with a son, and well respected by all. But he has never forgotten the one great love of his life, killed in a plane crash in 1970 just as they were to be reunited. He expands his business empire, with the help of his two sisters and his dubious connections with the expanding Mafia, from the increasingly popular archaeology site of Roman Brindisia, that he discovered earlier, to building seaside hotels and holiday homes, constructing an autostrada, renovating Brindisi Airport, and erecting a refugee camp outside Oria. All the while, in the background, there are palms to be greased, dalliances to distract and the underworld to circumnavigate. Tragedies go hand in hand with successes, and a mysterious person slowly makes their presence felt. Will Pasquale ever find peace and contentment as he nears his journey’s climax, or will he die a broken, lonely and lost soul?
