A journey of Sacchai, Sangathan and Sangharsh

The book is a memoir by Lalit Uniyal, who from an early age, was deeply interested in working for the welfare of the poor. The World of Aau takes the reader through a 40-year journey that lays bare the lives of Dalits, seen via the lens of a corrupt, hopeless and feudal system, the stronghold and power of landlords and politicians over the lives of people, the profound poverty and destitution of the region as well as the author’s own struggle and work, at great personal cost.

During his work in Aau, Lalit lived by and attempted to implement three core principles: Sacchai, Sangathan, aur Sangharsh, namely, Truthfulness (or Rightness), Organisation, and Struggle.

The book chronicles Lalit’s work with regard to a dormant lawsuit concerning a land ceiling case that was activated and the land in dispute was eventually distributed among the landless Dalits of Aau. The redistribution of land was a major event in the history of Aau as it undermined landlordism and changed the balance of power within the village. By a slow and irreversible process, the balance of power continues to be altered within the village, and a freer world of possibilities opens up for them.
