Girish Sahni - A Life in Science and Service
Dr. Girish Sahni (1956-2024) emerged from a middle-class background to become one of India's most distinguished biochemists. He was associated with the CSIR- Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTech) in Chandigarh from 1991 to 2015, where he served first as a scientist and later as Director (2005-2015). He subsequently became the 20th Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.
Dr. Sahni was a pioneer in the development of India's first indigenous clot-dissolving drug. He led the creation of natural streptokinase, followed by its recombinant and clot-specific variants. His groundbreaking work, along with that of his collaborators, made these life-saving treatments accessible and affordable to underserved populations.

About the Author's
Dr. Rajinder Singh - Professor Emeritus, Chandigarh University, Punjab-is a member of the research group Didactics of Physics and Science Communication at the Institute of Physics, Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg.
Dr. Singh has authored 55 books and 160 articles. His research focuses on Indian scientists, Nobel Prizes, and science education.
Dr. Abhay H. Pande is a Professor and Head of the Department of Biotechnology at National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), S.A.S. Nagar, Punjab, India. Prof. Pande has >26 years of experience in the field of protein research. He has published >90 papers in the national and international peer reviewed journals and has filed >18 patents (national and international). His research focuses on the development of novel protein therapeutics, including next generation antibodies, engineered enzymes and peptides.
