In the last one hundred years, there has been an increasing interest and development in Traditional Folk Media like folk arts, folk music, theatre, traditional fairs and festivals in India. This growing interest is largely based on the conviction that the social change arises out of art, aesthetics, creativity and indigenous solutions. The Development Studies of 1960s brought about a paradigm shift in understanding the concept of development and social change in society. The analyzed the role of Jathara as a local and traditional mode of communication for rural development. In addition, it has portrayed the historical perspective of Raj Gonds' Nagobha Jathara as a conduit of communication and development, Paatha Pantala Jathara of Sangham women, Deccan Development Society, Zaheerabad region of Telangana State.

About the Author: Srinivas Panthukala is an Assistant Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism in the Department of Communication, at the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. He is an expert in the area of Development Communication, Television Journalism and Political Economy of Mass Media. He was awarded an M.Phil degree on "Jathara as a mode of Communication for Development by the Department of Communication and Journalism, Osmania University, Hyderabad in 2009.

The Department of Film Studies and Visual Communication, EFL University, Hyderabad awarded him with a PHD degree in 2014. His doctoral thesis was entitled, 'Political Economy of the Media: The Rise of 24 Hours Television News Channels of Andhra Pradesh".
