Light From Match Box – Life of Jockin Arputham
Jockin Arputham, fondly called “Jockin sir,” dedicated nearly four decades to championing the rights of slum dwellers worldwide. Founder of the National Slum Dwellers Federation (NSDF) and president of Slum Dwellers International (SDI), he pioneered the principle of “no eviction without alternative.” Through mass protests and women-led mobilization, his grassroots strategies safeguarded vulnerable communities. He promoted community-driven urban planning and initiated small, interest-free loans to help families secure homes. Partnering with Mahila Milan, he placed women at the forefront of empowerment, relocating over 37,000 families. The impact of his struggle led Durairajan Kannan, an author from Jockin’s birthplace in Kolar Gold Fields, to pen his inspiring biography.
