Indian mural traditions pose fundamental challenges to conventional intellectual property frameworks. The creation of murals has historically been collective, anonymous, and community-based, diverging sharply from the individual authorship model embedded in copyright law under statutes such as the Copyright Act, 1957.

The knowledge systems underlying mural practices—including pigment preparation, surface treatment, iconographic rules, and stylistic canons—align closely with internationally recognized definitions of traditional knowledge, while the visual and symbolic elements qualify as traditional cultural expressions.

This book critically examines Indian mural traditions through the lens of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions, engaging with both national and international legal frameworks.
