The book, Glimpses of One Hundred Years of Coconut Research, is a compilation of the history of coconut research in India, with special reference to Kerala – the land of coconuts. Coconut research in India was started in the year 1916 by the erstwhile Madras state. The book presents a panoramic view of excerpts from the reports on coconut research from 1916-2016. Academicians, researchers, students, cultivators, historians and all those who are interested in coconut palm would find the book useful.
The coconut is one of the most important oilseed crops of the tropics. Every part of the tree is utilized in one way or other. There are innumerable uses to which the various parts of the tree are put: It is no wonder that the tree is called “Kalpavriksha" or “The Paradise Tree”. The book covers studies on a range of aspects like anatomy, botany, agronomy, meteorology, irrigation, crop improvement and breeding, pests and diseases, processing and value addition etc pertaining to the coconut palm.
About the Author: Abdul Kareem is an Agricultural Extensionist of India. He has pioneered several innovations in agricultural extension including those for promoting farmers’/rural innovations, value addition and product diversification in agriculture and models for combating farm labour shortage. He received his Master’s degree in Agricultural Extension from Kerala Agricultural University and earned his PhD in Agricultural Extension with gold medal from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.
He started his career as an Agricultural Extension Officer in the State Department of Agriculture in Kerala and subsequently joined Kerala Agricultural University, where he served as teacher of extension for undergraduates and postgraduates and headed the department of extension of College of Agriculture at Nileswar, headed the extension centres such as Farm Science Centre (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) and Extension Training Centre and also headed a Regional Agricultural Research Station. After his retirement as Professor and Associate Director of Extension from the university service, he has plunged into writing and publishing books. Besides agriculture and behavioural sciences, he loves philosophy and religion.
