This book is an attempt to bring together some basic information on the globally endangered Egyptian vulture, which is one of the nine species of vultures found in India. The distribution, mythological significance, habits and habitat, morphology, and subspecies of the Egyptian vulture, as well as its breeding and foraging behaviour, and threats in Uttar Pradesh, are discussed in this book. Some of the information in this book is based on personal observations and experience.

Vultures provide us with an array of ecological, economic, and cultural services free of cost. Therefore, public awareness regarding their importance is crucial. There are many potential areas in Uttar Pradesh that need to be addressed on a priority basis. We have done our best to explain the significance of the Egyptian vulture. If anyone has additional information, please let us know so that we can include it in the next edition.

About the Author:

Dr. Shivangi Mishra is an Assistant Professor of Zoology at the Department of Zoology, School of Sciences, JECRC University, Jaipur. During her doctoral thesis, she worked on Egyptian vultures. She has received six awards, four of which are international and two are national. Dr. Mishra is passionate about her work and has published more than 25 research articles in various national and international journals.

Dr. Adesh Kumar is an Assistant Professor of Zoology at the Department of Zoology, School of Sciences, JECRC University, Jaipur. During his doctoral thesis, he worked on the world's most threatened ecosystems, wetlands biodiversity, and management. He also served as a Project Assistant at the Institute of Wildlife Sciences, University of Lucknow from September 2017 to March 2019 and as a Program Officer in ENVIS-RP, Institute of Wildlife Sciences, University of Lucknow from December 2019 to September 2022. He has published 90 research papers in national and international journals.

Dr. Amita Kanaujia is a Professor at Department of Zoology at the University of Lucknow. She is also the Director of the Institute of Wildlife Sciences and the Coordinator of ENVIS-RP at the University of Lucknow. Her research areas include Wildlife, Biodiversity, and Environment. She has published over 100 research papers, four books and has presented at more than 500 national and international conferences. Additionally, she has completed 12 projects funded by various state-level and central funding agencies.
