The story is about an independent, poor, 10 year-old boy, Curly, who is eager to go fishing in the nearby river. What he hooks is unexpected. Although the story is fiction, certain aspects relate to the author’s own experiences.The narrative is very descriptive and detailed and highlights his relationship with nature. The story suggests that loneliness can be overcome when one is close to nature, and that life experiences are journeys rather that destinations.

The author was born in South Africa. His grandfather came as an indentured labourer to South Africa from India to work on the sugar cane plantations in Renishaw. The author spent most of his life living on these sugar estates in Kwazulu Natal. The author has a passion for nature, environmental education, gardening and angling. He is also a practising visual artist.The author is an educator, and has taught various subjects, from grade 4 to grade 12 in public schools in South Africa for 35 years. His specialist subjects include Geography, Science and Visual art. He has a Master of Education degree specialising in Environmental Education, and he has attended Childrens’ Environmental Conferences in USA and Japan. He has also toured England, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Monaco, Litchenstein, Sri Lanka, Turkey and India. He is presently teaching Science and Visual arts at Tehama International School in Saudi Arabia.
