While Partition stories are fairly well represented in Indian writings, they are mostly set in the western frontier of Punjab. Little is known about what happened in the eastern front, but the language barrier maybe another factor, since books in Bengali are not understood by all.

This short novel traces the course of the life of young Tarala Bala, born in erstwhile East Bengal, who lived through and survived the Partition of India. It is a narrative of the way of life in early 20th century Bengal, which is almost forgotten in contemporary India and the upheavals due to the Hindu-Muslim divide in the eastern state of Bengal which was also bisected by the Partition. Aided by her thoughtful and resolute nature, she escaped from East Pakistan to start life anew in India.

About the Author: I am a Probashi Bengali, born in Gaya, Bihar and have spent most of my life in Uttar Pradesh. After schooling in Naini Tal, now in Uttarakhand, I did my MBBS and MD in Paediatrics from KGMC, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and also live and practice here. After precariously balancing home and career for 40 years, I am now retired, with two adult children and three grandchildren, though I continue to see my child patients on an outdoor basis.

Covid times allowed me to indulge in a little writing and this novella is the result. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it
