In "The Ghost and the Orphan Boy," Pinku, an illegitimate child, was left at an orphanage on an eerie night when he was barely two days old. He was born out of wedlock to his parents while attending college. A ghost haunted him every time he dreamed, whispering in his ears and troubling him. After that, however, a deep cordial relationship developed between the ghost and Pinku. The ghost visited the orphanage where he lived, narrating the different tragic incidents, revealing that it was the soul of a deceased woman. The ghost loathed human society because it was filled with misery, lacked justice, and only provided laws for the wealthy. The ghost wanted to remain dead living forever, but could not stay in the dead living world as long as it wished, because the force of nature determined where and when it would be reborn, whereas a man of supernatural power could foretell for himself when and where he would be reborn.

Pinku deemed the orphanage to be the dumping ground for parentless children and hated the life of an orphan. He decided to run away from the orphanage. Before leaving, the ghost narrated the incident about his abandonment, it told Pinku what it knew very well and further said that his mother still could not forget him, but his father had not remembered him even a day. In desperate need to see his parents, Pinku wrote a letter to his uncle, Krishna, and left the orphanage forever one late night in search of them.
