Gandhi’s visit to Mauritius (1901) has over the years been reduced to insignificance which is unfair to the greatest man of the 20th century. This book re-establishes the importance of that historical visit and retraces how influential his coming was on the subsequent evolution of political events as regards the Indians in Mauritius who from a downtrodden people would eventually occupy pole position in the fifties and attain independence in 1968. India and Mauritius enjoy a unique relationship. It is the contention of this book that the cardinal step of that excellent bilateral relationship had been inadvertently founded by young Gandhi though his speeches and his famous Taher Bagh address in Port-Louis. Young Gandhi is the historical ‘conduit’ between India and Mauritius.

This book is an in-depth analysis of that visit and is written in a narrative that suits the general reader and the specialist as well.

About the Author: Mr Bucktawor Raj Luckeenrainsing holds a B.A Honours in English/History from University of Mauritius. He has read for an M.A at Deakin University (Australia) in 1997. In 2007 he obtained an MPhil (History) from University of Mauritius. He has been working as an Education officer at the Ministry of Education. The present work is a result of the MPhil research.
